Spring Home Maintenance

Spring weather can be somewhat unpredictable. While the reprieve from cold temperatures is something to celebrate, severe weather can hit unexpectedly. After cold, harsh winters, it's important to take advantage of the warm temperatures and inspect different areas of your home or business and provide any maintenance necessary.

Locate and fix roof damage

Sunlight weakens shingles over time and causes them to crack thus exposing your attic to moistures. Check for loose or buckling shingles and replace them.

In the event that strong wind from a spring storm causes shingles to blow off, call a roofer. If water does happen to get in and causes extensive water damage to your home or office, please give us a call.

Clean and repair gutters

Gutters are put in place to catch water runoff from the roof, but they also have a tendency to catch leaves and other debris which lead to clogs. Remove all debris from your gutters and downspouts to prevent damage to the exterior of your home. Also, make sure downspouts are positioned to direct water away from your house.

Trim or remove trees

Trees that grow too closely to your house can cause storm damage to all parts of your home, not just your roof. Contact an insured tree surgeon to remove any weakened, dead, or overhanging limbs. In the event that a tree falls on your roof and causes structural damage, call us! We provide emergency roof tarping and can help extract water and rebuild the structure of your home.

Update bedding cover

Avoid using any type of mulch that floats on the exterior of the building. During a heavy storm, mulch will float into drains that channel water away from basements or areas that are below grade. We recommend stone or crushed bricks for bedding cover.

Check for window damage and replace caulking

Check windows from the outside to determine whether there's any damage to the caulking, which seals out water, air and other elements. If any of it is loose or peeling, remove it and replenish with fresh caulk.

Other tips

Clean dryer vent and exhaust ducts

Thousands of fires are sparked each year by clogged dryer vents. Unplug the clothes dryer, disconnect the hose from the vent in the back of the dryer, and clean out lint from both the hose and the vent using your vacuum cleaner's crevice tool.

Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and check your fire extinguishers' expiration dates.
